LOCATION:               Based in Chişinău, Moldova

CLASSIFICATION:   Temporary contracted position for July-December, 2023.

COMPENSATION:     Daily rate of $36.99 USD – (PSC-5)

        The Homestay Coordinator (HSC) is responsible for the overall coordination of Peace Corps Trainees’ (PCT) safe integration in Moldovan society through the Pre-Service Training (PST) Homestay Program integrating with the Peace Corps Programming and Training staff. HSC recruits and selects Moldovan families for the PCTs for the PST period, plans, implements and evaluates the home stay training for PCTs and PCTs’ host families, assists with the cultural adjustment issues and monitors and evaluates the Host Family program in the PST training communities. The Homestay Coordinator works under the supervision of the Training Manager (TM) and in close coordination with the Language, Culture, and Integration Coordinator (LCIC).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

PREPERATION PHASE

Home Stay Logistics

·         In conjunction with the Training Manager plans and implements host family recruitment.

·         In conjunction with the LCIC prepares the homestay continuum for PST.

·         Advertises and conducts community meetings to solicit support in identifying host families.

·         Identifies, visits, interviews, and selects PST host families.

·         Provides orientation to host families about the awareness and prevention of sexual assault and sexual harassment.

·         Represents Peace Corps Moldova with community officials and organizations.

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE

Home Stay Integration and Cultural Adjustment

·         Coordinates host family and PCTs interactions.

·         Co-facilitate Host Family and Moldova Culture Orientation session.

·         Implements a strategy for involving host families in training.

·         Coordinates PCTs’ host family stay integration.

·         Supports PCTs’ intercultural learning and adaptation at site.

·         Together with the LTIs conducts regular host family meetings.

·         Will work outside of official “working hours,” including evenings and weekends.

·         Regularly problem-solves situations with home stay families.

·         Collaborates with the PST Admin Assistants to arrange logistics during Practice School.

Home Stay Monitoring and Evaluation

·         Monitors the PST home stay providing support and assistance with the cultural adjustment.

·         Monitors and evaluates the PCTs integration with their host families.

·         Tracks issues, provides feedback, and prepares weekly reports.

·         Monitors the host family’s assistance and support with PCTs.

·         Evaluates PCTs’ cultural learning and home stay integration.

·         Evaluates and records homestay integration and collaboration.

Volunteer Competency Model / Learning Development Plan

·         Familiarize with the Volunteer Competency Model, and the assessment methods in the Learning Development Plan.

·         Documents PCTs’ integration into their communities.

Participate in PST Training of Trainers and Staff Conferences

·         Participates in the PST Training of Trainers (TOTs).

·         Learn PC Moldova policies and regulations.

·         Participates at the end of PST Staff conference with suggestions for future PSTs.

Peace Corps Expectations and Standards of Appropriate Conduct

·         Meets with overseeing coordinator to discuss, plan and report on activities.

·         Is open to feedback and understands that performance will be evaluated on an on-going basis.

·         Abide by the PST Staff Code of Professional Conduct.

·         Complies with PC policies and regulations listed in the PC PST Staff Handbook.

·         Maintains professional relationships with all the training team.

·         Works both independently and as part of a team.

·         Maintains a professional and positive public image.

·         Performs other related duties, as necessary.

·         Submits the timesheet on a bi-weekly basis.

·         Undertake additional assignments as required within and outside normal training hours.

Additional Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the SSM evaluates the home stay at the PST Sites to ensure conformity to established standards for safety and security of Trainees. Ensures host families and local officials are willing and able to provide appropriate support to Trainees. Coordinates orientation for host families, including safety and security matters related to Trainees.  Assists the Training Manager and the DPT in developing safety and security systems for pre-service training and supports safety and security training objectives, including reinforcing Trainee roles and responsibilities related to personal safety and security.  Immediately communicates PCT safety and security concerns and issues to the Safety and Security Manager (SSM) and Training Manager.  Knowledgeable and supportive of Peace Corps safety and security policies and procedures, including the timely reporting of suspicious incidents, persons or articles.

·         Performs duties during a flexible work week with a flexible work schedule as indicated in the contract.

·         Events may require occasional work in the evenings and on weekends and holidays.

·         May require lifting and arranging of classroom and office furniture and equipment.

·         May be required to courier cash and/or purchase orders to various vendors, PCTs or PCVs.

·         May be required to operate a US government owned vehicle.

Qualifications, skills and abilities:

  • University degree required;
  • Fluency in English, Romanian and Russian;
  • Driver’s license and experience with SUV vehicles are desired.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Exposure to or experience with foreigners preferred.
  • General knowledge of Moldovan culture, communities, and professional norms is essential;
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience working in an intercultural environment;
  • Flexibility while working in an intercultural environment and ability to work as a member of a team;
  • Exposure to or experience with foreigners preferred.
